|Pagetext=Last Saturday (July 15) a good time was enjoyed at the lively little village of Golden Gate, 15 miles from this place. There were a large number of people from the surrounding country assembled near Mr. Skinner's store, watching a game of base ball between the "Gophers" and the "Shoo Flys" for the championship of the county (Brown County). Although the day was exceedingly hot, both clubs appeared on the grounds in good trim, and eager for the contest. After looking around a good deal for an umpire, the game commenced and lasted about two hours, the "Shoo Flys" coming out victorious. The following is the score:  (outs and runs for each player)  Shoo Flys  21  Gophers 15

After the game was decided in favor of the Shoo Flys, cheers were given, and the captain of the Gophers presented the captain of the Shoo Flys with a bat and ball. After the ball playing, a race took place between Mr. Skinner's mare and LaFrambois' pony, the latter coming out winner. In the evening a dance at Mr. Skinner's, which was well attended.
