The Midwest League played a 140 game, two-division, split-season schedule which began on April 7 and ended on August 28. The first half ended on June 16.
An All-Star Game was played on June 26 between All-Star Teams representing the league's Northern and Southern divisions. The South won by a 4-1 score.
A two-tier championship playoff was held after the season. The best-of-five championship round was won by South Bend.
Total 1989 attendance: 1,716,443.
