In high school, he lettered in football, basketball, baseball, and wrestling. Played baseball at Illinois, Is a bowler in the off-season. Played semi-pro ball for Saskatoon in the Western Canada League in 1960. Signed for the Philadelphia Phillies as an outfielder by Walter Laskowski. Started pitching in 1962[1].
