Pre-professional career

• Graduated from Hayward High School in 1944 and participated in baseball, football, basketball, track, and boxing.
• Played American Legion ball in Oakland.

Achievements

• Tied for the lead in triples with 13 in the 1948 California League.
• Was third in doubles with 31 in the 1948 California League.
• He led the 1948 Visalia team in total bases with 244.
• As of 1951 was the co-holder of the California League record for most errors by an outfielder in a game.
• Hit a home run in his first game in the last of the 11th inning to win the game 4-3.
• Getting five for five, a home run, triple, double and single was his greatest thrill.
• Said he would "always remember" one home run he hit in the West Texas-New Mexico League when he was with Clovis that netted him $200.00.
