During the 1952 season Bill Smith was a player/manager for the Marion (NC) Marauders of the Class D Western Carolina League. He replaced Gabby Grant as manager mid-way through the season, and Smith was later replaced as manager by Frank Robinson.
He was selected as the first baseman for the Western Carolina League All-Star Team.[1]
