- In high school, lettered in baseball & wrestling.
- In college, once pitched eight innings after breaking bones in both hands and won the game, giving up only one run.
- Played American Legion ball.
Achievements
- Led 1961 Appalachian League in wins (11), complete games (8), and innings pitched (98); was second in ERA (2.94).
- Led 1963 Carolina League and 1964 Eastern Leaguein games pitched (61 and 67).
- Pitched a 1-0 three-hit shutout against 1965 Tacoma in the last game of the season.
