- Played baseball, basketball, and football in high school.
- Helped pitch school to Clas 4-A Texas state quarterfinals in 1972.
- Played Little League, American Legion and Connie Mack ball.
- Helped pitch his Connie Mack team to a national championship in 1970 and 1971.
