CINCINNATI, April 14. - Frank Bell, once a catcher for Brooklyn when that club was in the Association, was shot through the heart over a game of cards by Joe Hughes early yesterday morning. Bell had been a private watchman for some time. His ball-playing days were ended some time ago. Hughes was a bar-tender. Bell was the aggressor in the affair. He attacked Hughes in a savage manner after having lost his money at cards. Bystanders interfered and pulled Bell off, but he shook them off and reached for a pistol in his hip pocket. Hughes saw the movement, and quick as a flash turned to the sideboard, and grabbing a revolver fired three shots at Bell, who reeled and fell to the floor dead. [1]
