- Played Little League and American Legion ball.
- Played baseball and football in high school; was all-Southern Illinois at quarterback his senior year.
- Played varsity football and baseball at Washington University of St Louis; set school football records of 39.8 yards per punt and a 74-yard kick.
- Went 6-1 with a 1.92 ERA at Washington University of St Louis.
- Compiled a 12-2 record and 2.20 ERA in 1971 while at Southern Illinois University.
- Helped lead Southern Illinois University to District Four championship and second place finish in the College World Series.
- Was losing pitcher in National title game against University of Southern California, but three of the five runs he gave up were unearned.
