- The ISL played a 120 game schedule which began on April 25 and ended on August 22.
- An All-Star Game was played on July 12 between Mattoon and a league All-Star team; Mattoon won a 1-0 pitchers duel[1].
- A two round championship series was played; in the first round the first-place team played the third place team, and the second played the fourth, with the winners of those series meeting for the championship (this is a Shaughnessy playoff). Both rounds were best-of-five affairs. West Frankfort was crowned playoff champion.
- Total 1948 attendance: 120,767.
