- The Midwest League played a 140 game, two-division, split-season schedule which began on April 14 and ended on August 31. The first half ended on June 22.
- An All-Star Game was played on June 6 between a Midwest League All-Star team and the American Association's Omaha Royals; the Stars won by an 11-7 score[1].
- A two-tier championship playoff was held after the season. The best-of-three championship round was won by Appleton.
- Total 1978 attendance: 555,546.
