• Younger brother of Lou Vickery.

• Led his Colt League team (Pensacola, Florida) to the Colt League World Championships in 1959.
• Led high school to state football championship; was named All-Alabama in football as a senior.
• High school baseball team finished second in the state.
• Played varsity basketball at Troy State College.

• Led 1965 New York-Pennsylvania League catchers in fielding percentage (.988).
