• Self-identified as being of German-English ancestry.
• Hitting his major league home run, a blow for the Boston Red Sox in 1947, was his greatest baseball thrill.

• Attended Los Angeles High School where he won three letters in baseball in high school.
• Was captain of the baseball team one year and made all-city in high school.
• Played baseball at the University of Southern California and won all-conference shortstop honors.
