A simple metric to estimate a pitcher's pitch counts. It was invented by Tom Tango, and a more thorough description is available at Tango's essay on the subject. It is based on the premise that a pitcher who allows more balls in play will not go as deep into the count as one who allows a lot of walks and strikeouts.
Formula
3.3 * PA + 1.5 * SO + 2.2 * BB
Where:
- PA is Plate appearances
- SO is Strikeouts
- BB is Walks
