• Resided in Memphis, Tennessee in 1952.
• Self-identified as African-American.
• Hit a home run and finished the day with three hits in five trips to the plate in his first time at bat with Colorado Springs.
• Born in New Albany, Mississippi, per 1952 Pacific Coast League Thumbnail Sketches
• Smashed a line drive home run into the left field stans at Comiskey Park in Chicago while he was with the Memphis Red Sox; only two other left hand batters, Larry Doby and Ted Williams, ever performed that feat.

• Attended high school in New Albany, Mississippi.
• Played baseball and basketball in high school.

Achievements

• Hit .372, .382, .369, .352 and .375 in the Negro League.
• Was second in batting average in the 1951 Pacific Coast League with .342.
• Led the 1951 Pacific Coast League in stolen bases with 41.

Outside of baseball

• Served in the U. S. Army Quartermaster Corps three years during World War II.

Contract signing

• The Chicago White Sox purchased his contract in 1950 from the Memphis Red Sox of the Negro American League and was sent to Colorado Springs and entered the game directly after leaving the airplane.
