- Played the outfield for Fort Ord in 1951 and hit .372, the next campaign he played third base and batted .380.
Outside of baseball
- Did not take his regular furloughs in the U.S. Army, thus accumulating 40 days and thus was discharged on February 6, 1952 instead of late in March.
- Attended law school during the off-season in 1954.
- Served in the U.S. Army for two years.
Achievements
- Playing for San Francisco, Melton hit the first pitch to him in organized ball over the left field fence at Hollywood; the opposing pitcher was Jack Salveson.
