  • Participated in football, basketball and track in high school.
  • Made all league in football and basketball in high school.
  • Played baseball for the first time at Stanford University.
  • Graduated from Stanford University with a B.A. in Political Science.
  • Played football, basketball and baseball at Stanford University.
  • Won baseball awards at Stanford University.
  • Played the outfield for Fort Ord in 1951 and hit .372, the next campaign he played third base and batted .380.

Outside of baseball

  • Did not take his regular furloughs in the U.S. Army, thus accumulating 40 days and thus was discharged on February 6, 1952 instead of late in March.
  • Attended law school during the off-season in 1954.
  • Served in the U.S. Army for two years.

Achievements

  • Playing for San Francisco, Melton hit the first pitch to him in organized ball over the left field fence at Hollywood; the opposing pitcher was Jack Salveson.

Contract signing

  • Was signed by San Francisco after leaving Stanford.
