- While in high school he pitched a no-hit game.
- Was named the Most Valuable Player in the Michigan American Legion tourney in 1951.
- Getting five for five in the State Legion tourney and being named the most valuable player was his biggest thrill in baseball.
- Led the 1952 California League outfielders in assists with 24.

- Was "recently discharged" from the U.S. Army after 21 months of service in 1955.
