Moriarty belonged to the rough and ready era: used fists when language failed both as a player and umpire. While working in a typwriter factory in Woodstock, IL George played semi-pro ball. He had breif tryout with the Chicago Cubs in 1903 and 1904. In 1906 through 1908 he played for the New York Highlanders from there he signed with Detroit in 1909.
