Pre-professional career
- In high school, he played baseball and basketball. Led basketball team to 1958 state championship.
- Was named to All-Pennsylvania and High School All-American teams.
- Played basketball (but not baseball) at Baldwin-Wallace College.
Achievements
- Led the 1962 Pioneer League in batting, total bases and RBI.
- Was fourth in batting in the 1963 Florida State League.
- Named to 1965 Eastern League All-Star team; was fifth in batting.
