Harry Matthews was a catcher in the Southern Association for most of the first decade of the 20th century. He later served as manager for several teams at lower levels.

The Atlanta Crackers signed "Memphis Bill" Terry to his first pro contract on Matthews' recommendation. As manager of the Newnan team in 1915, Matthews then arranged for Terry's release to Newnan, and received much credit for helping Terry to a 7-1 record as a pitcher for the team.

Newnan won the pennant with a 39-20 record that year, and Matthews was given $50 in gold by Newnan fans before the final game of the season in appreciation of his performance as player-manager.

After his baseball career ended Matthews became a jailer in Covington, Kentucky.
