Help:Linking to people
From SABR Encyclopedia
Linking to people is usually not difficult. For most people, just typing the person's name with two brackets around it will create a working link. For example:
-
[[Barry Zito]]
will successfully link to the pitcher: Barry Zito
However, for people who share a name with another player, this will not always work as you might expect it to. For example, if you want to link to the pitcher Dave Smith from the 1980s:
-
[[Dave Smith]]
will not work. It creates this link: Dave Smith, which goes to a page that lists all Dave Smiths. -
[[Dave Smith (born 1955)]]
is the correct link. It looks like this: Dave Smith (born 1955). -
[[Dave Smith (born 1955)|Dave Smith]]
goes to the same place, but looks like this: Dave Smith.
If there is one person with a particular name that is much more notable, the name will link directly to him. For example, although Cal Ripken, Sr. was known as Cal Ripken during his playing days, typing [[Cal Ripken]]
will link to his son, since he is now the more notable player.
-
[[Cal Ripken]]
links to Cal Ripken, Jr, and looks like this: Cal Ripken -
[[Cal Ripken, Jr.]]
also links to Cal Ripken, Jr, and looks like this: Cal Ripken, Jr. -
[[Cal Ripken, Sr.]]
links to Cal Ripken, Sr, and looks like this: Cal Ripken, Sr. -
[[Cal Ripken, Sr.|Cal Ripken]]
links to Cal Ripken, Sr, and looks like this: Cal Ripken
