• Struck out 19 batters in a game in high school.
• Was second team All-MAC pitcher for Bowling Green State University as a junior in 1976, finishing 7-3 with a 3.55 ERA.

• Finished in the top three in his umpiring school, eventually earning him his first job in the 1978 Midwest League.
