• Graduated from Washington High School in Princess Anne, Maryland.
• Was captain of the baseball team two years in high school.

Achievements

• Had the third lowest earned run average in the 1947 Eastern Shore League with the Rehoboth Beach

 club, his first year, with 2.83.

• Was third in earned run average in the 1948 Interstate League with 2.54.

Outside of baseball

• Is in the oyster business during the off-season.
• Served 2 1/2 years in the U. S. Marine Corps.

Contract signing

• Was signed to his first pro contract by John "poke" Whalen, a Pittsburgh Pirate scout, in 1947.
