His nationality is Irish-German. He graduated from Lyons High School in 1945 and played baseball and basketball. The highlight of his high school career was a no-hit game while he was in his junior year. He does farming and construction work during the off-season. He was in the Merchant Marine for 7 1/2 months. Last year with Hornell he pitched eight and one-third innings of no-hit, no-run ball. He was with three different teams in 1948 and chalked up 121 strikeouts in 124 innings.
