He is a salesman during the off-season. His hobbies are playing the harmonica and riding horses. In 1945 he was chosen the Most Valuable Player in the Larry Gilbert amateur league in Nashville and was given a trip to the World Series by a local newspaper. He served in the U. S. Army for 13 months. He led the 1951 Pioneer League in bases on balls allowed with 183, hits allowed with 226, runs allowed with 202 and earned runs allowed with 158.
