Pre-professional career

• Attended high school in Nashville, Tennessee.
• Played baseball and basketball in high school.
• Had 10 assists at shortstop in his first pro game in 1941 with Americus in the Georgia-Florida League.
• Getting two base hits and driving in the winning run in his first big league game to beat the Saint Louis Cardinals in 1943 when he was with the Philadelphia Phillies was his greatest thrill.
• Always put on his right shoe first when dressing for a game.
