- Resided in Birmingham, Alabama in 1953.
- Was named manager of the Birmingham Barons in 1952 during the season, replacing Al Vincent.
- Drew three bases on balls and got a hit in his other time at bat in his first pro game.

- Attended Darling Prep School.
- Played basketball, football and baseball in prep school.
- Attended the University of Georgia but did not graduate.
- Played baseball and football at the University of Georgia.
- Played American Legion ball in Atlanta in 1941.

- Served in the U.S. Navy from 1942 through 1945, and did not play professional baseball in those years.
