  • Resided in New Iberia, Louisiana in 1953.

Pre-professional career

  • Attended New Iberia High School.
  • Was a top boxer in high school.
  • Had a scholarship to Louisiana State University in boxing but the U. S. Marine Corps beckoned him
 first.

Achievements

  • Led the 1951 Evangeline League in home runs with 42 and that set a new League record.
