This template formally records that a person was a player on a particular club in a given year.

In the most usual case of a person playing on a professional club in an organized league, this template is only used when the person is confirmed to have appeared in at least one official game in the league. In that case, the parameters year, club, and league specify the club in question, where club is the "short name" of the club, and league the "short name" of the league. Thus, a typical case might look like:

{{person-played-for | year=1982 | club=Columbus | league=International}}

This template can also be used to record playing engagements outside of professional leagues. The same syntax is used, but an additional parameter type specifies the nature of the playing engagement. Possible values for type include:

  • independent: A team unaffiliated with an organized league. (Note this specifies the team is independent, and should not be confused with a team in an independent league.)
  • semipro: A semi-professional team.
  • college: A college or college-based team, generally the varsity team in modern intercollegiate competition, but may include club teams in the 19th and early 20th centuries where no recognized varsity team existed.

Optional parameters may give more information about the engagement. They include:

  • start_month: The month in which the person appeared in his first game (1-12)
  • start_day: The day of month on which the person appeared in his first game (1-31)
  • end_month: The month in which the person appeared in his last game (1-12)
  • end_day: The day of month on which the person appeared in his last game (1-31)
