Pre-professional career
- Played baseball and basketball at Avenal (CA) High School
- Played baseball at the University of Southern California, Fullerton Junior College, and San Jose State University, and basketball at USC and Fullerton.
- Hit a 10th inning grand slam home run in a 1951 game to give San Jose State a win over rival College of the Pacific.
Outside of baseball
- Graduated from San Jose State University and pursued post-graduate studies there during baseball off-seasons.
