• Was residing in Taft, California in 1952.
• Was a second cousin of Hall of Fame pitcher Walter Johnson.

[edit] Pre-professional career

• Played baseball and basketball at Avenal (CA) High School
• Played baseball at the University of Southern California, Fullerton Junior College, and San Jose State University, and basketball at USC and Fullerton.
  • Hit a 10th inning grand slam home run in a 1951 game to give San Jose State a win over rival College of the Pacific.

• Graduated from San Jose State University and pursued post-graduate studies there during baseball off-seasons.
