Personal

  • Graduated from Texas A&M University in 1923 with a degree in mechanical engineering and was a three-year letterman as a pitcher on the Aggie baseball team (1921-23). He was also a member of the Ross Volunteers in the Corps of Cadets.
  • Was a roommate of Lou Gehrig in the spring of 1924.
  • In 1978, he was named to the Texas A&M Athletic Hall of Fame and in 1981 he was named a Distinguished Alumnus.
  • In 1984, Peter Ueberroth, the Commissioner of Major League Baseball, asked Mr. Olsen to throw out the ceremonial first pitch prior to the first World Series Game played between the Detroit Tigers and the San Diego Padres. Olsen was said to have attended more World Series games than anyone.
  • In 1985, he was inducted into the Texas Baseball Hall of Fame
  • Was a member of SABR from 1985 to 1991.

Outside of baseball

  • Founded a manufacturing company which became a leader in the development and supply of special tools needed in oil, chemical, mining, plastic and atomic energy programs and industries. He sold it in 1978.
  • Amassed an excellent baseball memorabilia collection.
