- Resided in Oakland, California in 1953.
- Self-identified as being of African-American ancestry.
- Was the sole support of his parents as well as five brothers and two sisters in 1955.
- His father was unable to work due to chronic asthma.
[edit] Pre-professional career
- Attended McClymonds High School in Oakland, California.
- Played baseball three years in high school.
- Won eight and lost none and batted .369 including four doubles and a triple in his final prep year.
- Played two years of American Legion ball in Oakland for a team his father managed.
- Won five and lost two in American Legion ball in 1952.
- Was acclaimed as "Oakland's best prep baseball player" at the 1952 American Legion prep all-star game in Oakland as he struck out seven in four innings and allowed only three hits and no runs in the all-star game.

- Was employed at the American Red Cross Headquarters in San Francisco during the off-season in 1955.
