Resided in North Adams, Massachusetts in 1953.
Said his biggest thrill in baseball came in 1948 when he was with Lynn of the New England League and his team was playing Nashua when he came to bat in the last of the ninth inning with two out and his team trailing by three runs and the bases loaded and with the count three and two, the opposing pitcher switched from a right-handed to a southpaw hurler. Long bats left, and on the very first pitch Long belted the ball out of the park to give his team a victory.

Established a new RBI record for the Eastern League in 1950, driving in 134 mates to better the mark set in 1930 by four held by Ken Strong.
Led the 1948 Northeastern League in runs batted in with 119.
Tied for the lead in doubles with 35 in the 1949 Eastern League.
Led the 1950 Eastern League in home runs with 27 and runs batted in with 134.
Was second in home runs with 33 in the 1952 Southern Association.

While playing sandlot ball around Green Bay, Wisconsin, he was spotted by Casey Stengel, then managing Milwaukee in 1944 and was signed to contract and sent to Lima, Ohio in 1945.
