- Played basketball and baseball in high school; had a .410 batting average in three seasons of varsity baseball.
- Was named all-league and all-Ohio while in high school.
- Played Little League, American Legion and Connie Mack ball. Led his team to Connie Mack World Series Championship in 1968.
Achievements
- Led 1969 Gulf Coast League second basemen in fielding (.970) and double plays (26) and was named to all-star team.
- Voted 1971 American Association Rookie of the Year, played in league all-star game, and was named MVP of 1971 Wichita.
