- Resided in Boise, Idaho in 1955.
- Self-identified as being of French-Indian-German-Irish-Dutch-English-Scottish ancestry.
- Married with two children in 1955.
- In 1955, described his most unusual experience as follows: "Against Whitman College I pitched a one-hitter and held the lone hit in my hand because there was no one covering first base."

- Graduated from Elmira, Oregon High School in 1949.
- Lettered in baseball, track, football and basketball in high school.
- His last two games in high school were 1-0 no-hitters.
- Graduated from Linfield College with a B.S. Degree in Physical Education.
- Played varsity baseball in college.
- Played semi-pro ball for Drain, Oregon Black Sox.
