The first baseball club organized in Independence was on April 29, 1864, at the office of J.M. Weart, who was the leading spirit in the enterprise.
Independence IA (current population about 6000)is about 35 miles N of Cedar Rapids and about 25 miles E of Waterloo IA.
As of August 2012, this club is the earliest listed base ball club in Iowa -- but there is uncertainty about what game was played by a club that played in Davenport in 1858.
