On August 1st, the first nine of the Jefferson Base Ball Club, Ed McNight, T.F. Higley, J.B. King, George W. Phelps, Fred S. Sanford, S.W. Pierce, N.S. Bright, William Mount and J.J. Gibson, met at Brighton a nine of the Washington Base Ball Club, Washington. They lost by a score of 35 to 54, but accepted their defeat with the philosophy of true sportsmen. C.D. Leggett acted as their official scorer.
Brighton IA is in the SE corner of the state. It is about 70 miles SW of Davenport.
Washington IA (1870 pop. about 2600) is about 30 miles SE of Iowa City. Fairfield IA (1860 pop. about 1,850; 1870 pop. about 2,200) is about 55 miles SW of Iowa City and about 30 miles SW of Washington IA.
