First iron ore mine in Minnesota was the Tower-Soudan mine which sent its first shipment of iron ore to Two Harbors in 1884. Tower was the locale of the brief Lake Vermilion gold rush of 1865-1868.
The first intra-city matches involving Tower and Ely and Two Harbors started around 1890 (more research needs to be done).
Census high for Tower was 1,366 in 1900.
