The Owyhee Avalanche of Ruby City, Idaho, March 19, 1870, reports: "Elko has a base ball club, numbering twenty-five members." This is undoubtedly the Striped Stockings club of Elko that challenged the Silver Stars of Carson City in May. See the San Francisco Daily Evening Bulletin, May 7, 1870.
Elko NV (1870 pop. about 1200)is about 300 miles SW of Carson City NV and 250 miles W of Salt Lake City UT.
