The first mention I’ve found is the game of the “Swift Foots” of Charlotte against the “Swift Foots” of Salisbury, at Concord, NC, July 17, 1879. See Salisbury Carolina Watchman, July 10, July 24, 1879.
Charlotte NC (1880 pop. about 7,000)and Salisbury NC (current pop. about 33,0000.) are about 20 miles NE and SW of Charlotte and Salisbury, respectively.
