Roseburg, Oregon, May 7, 1867 A base-ball club has been recently organized at this place, with Hon. S. F. Chadwick President; H. H. Gale, Secretary, and James Walton, Umpire. Weekly meetings are held at the Roseburg Academy, and the primary steps have been taken for improving the undeveloped muscle of Roseburg in good earnest.
Roseburg, OR (1870 pop. about 600)is about 70 miles S of Eugene.

Historical Note: Stephen Fowler Chadwick was born in Connecticut, and moved to Oregon in 1851 after passing the New York Bar in 1850. In 1877, he became the 5th Governor of the State of Oregon. He studied for the bar while working at Stoples & Goddard and Edward E. and H.B. Cowles, on Wall Street, in New York City. His son, Stephen J. Chadwick, moved to Washington State, became a lawyer and eventually served as Chief Justice of the Washington State Supreme Court.
