• Was residing in San Francisco, California in 1949 and 1955.
• Self-identified as being of Italian ancestry
• Married in 1955.

• Worked as a grocery clerk in the off-season in 1949.
• Served in the U.S. Army for one year
• Was a bartender during the off-season in 1955.
• Served in the U.S. Marine Corps for three years.
• Refereed basketball games for charity in the winter as a hobby as of 1955.

• Participated in baseball, track, football, and basketball at Galileo High School in San Francisco, graduated in 1945. He was chosen to play in the Esquire Boys Game.
• Played in the first Esquire All-American baseball game in 1944.
