Jacob (Big Jake) August Helmuth is married and has one daughter, Jacqueline, who was born in March, 1951. He lives in Fresno, California per the California League Gold Book (Third Edition). His nationality is Russian-German. He graduated from Salem High School in 1947 and participated in baseball, football and track. He attended Saint Mary's College for one year. He graduated from Fresno Junior College and played football and baseball. He works in a winery during the off-season.

On August 26, 1949, he married Vera Mae Padgett on the field before Fresno's game against Stockton, then homered in the second inning in his first time at bat.[1]
