Personal

While playing second base for the Marion (NC) Marauders of the Class D Western Carolina League during the 1952 season, Bob Davis was voted Most Popular Player by the fans.[1] He was also selected as the second baseman for the league All-Star Team..[2]

Davis was the youngest member of a family of baseball stars. One brother, Lawrence "Crash" Davis, starred collegiately at Duke University before signing a professional contract and ultimately reaching the majors as a second baseman for the Philadelphia Athletics. Another brother, "Hut", advanced to the Class A Eastern League with Scranton (PA) and later managed Concord in the Class D North State League. A third brother, "Toad", was a star catcher in semi-pro ball for a number of years.[3]

At the end of the 1952 season, The McDowell News wrote about his plans for the offseason: "Bob Davis, voted the most popular Marauder, is scheduled to take his Army physical next Thursday. If the Army doesn't take him, he'll probably work as a shipping clerk in a plant near his home at Gastonia (NC)."[4]
