- In high school, earned three letters each in baseball, basketball, and football.
- Was named all-Washington and Topps High School All-District Eight baseball teams in his senior year.
- Quarterbacked Wenatchee High to state football championship, named to All-Washington and All-American football teams.

- Turned down an athletic scholarship to University of Notre Dame to sign with the Phillies.
