Spread of baseball project map

The map below (which may take a second to load the data and appear) is made from information currently available in the Spread of baseball project.

The map starts out with a view of New York and the surrounding area, where baseball was first played and we already have significant research.

Don't like the map? If you'd rather browse the information by region, visit the main project page and scroll down for a list of regions (U.S. states, countries outside the U.S.).

If you zoom out using the controls on the left, you can see records of early play for the rest of the United States and the rest of the world - including some from Europe and Asia. You can also move around the map by clicking to "grab" the map, holding down the mouse button, and dragging.

Clicking a marker will either take you to an individual event or to a state page. The page will open in a new window so that your place in the map is maintained.

Is there information near where you live?

  • If there is, click the marker to find out what information we have, and view it in the SABR Encyclopedia.
    • If there is one event in your area, you will go straight to that game, club, or predecessor game.
    • If there are multiple events, you can go to the state page and find the data for your area.
  • If not, you may want to see what's left to learn and find out how baseball came to your town.
