- In high school, lettered in baseball, football, and basketball.
- At Western Michigan University, he lettered in football and baseball, and earned a B.S. degree.
- Baseball team won Mid-American Conference title each year he played.
- Was all Mid-American Conference in baseball in 1950-51-52 and all-MAC in football in 1951.

- In 1953, he received the American Baseball Congress' Minor League Rookie-of-the-Year Award.
- Led the 1953 Western League, 1954 Southern Association, 1956 International League, 1957 International League and 1958 International League in stolen bases.
- Named center-fielder on Look Magazine's Minor League All-Star Team in 1956.
- Led 1962 American Association outfielders in double plays (5).

- Served in the US Army (paratroops) for two years.
- Was a coach for 1969 Buffalo.
