- Won baseball letters and made the all-county team two years in succession in high school.

- Play sandlot ball around Oakland before turning professional in 1938.

- Led the 1950 Pacific Coast League in sacrifice hits with 35.
- Was voted the most valuable player on the Sacramento Solon roster in 1950.
