• Attended high school in Alameda, California.
• Won baseball letters and made the all-county team two years in succession in high school.
• Was captain of the baseball team both years he made the all-county team.
• Play sandlot ball around Oakland before turning professional in 1938.

• Led the 1950 Pacific Coast League in sacrifice hits with 35.
• Was voted the most valuable player on the Sacramento Solon roster in 1950.

• Was drafted by the Cleveland Indians from Sacramento in 1948 but was sent to Portland and then back to Sacramento.
